Hello! My name is Susan Arness, I am a professional genealogist and owner of Perham Hill Genealogy.
My fascination with family history began early. At fourteen, I completed my first house history project, researching the pioneers who built my former home on Perham Hill Road in Farmington, Maine. That early curiosity eventually grew into a professional calling.
Now based in Waterloo, Ontario (I moved to Canada in 1983), I specialize in Ontario research, with particular strength in land and property records, but I also have the training and tools to conduct research beyond my immediate region.
Over the years, I have become familiar with several European languages—French, German, Spanish, various Eastern European languages, and Latin—which allows me to navigate a wide range of historical records. My work has included German, Loyalist, Mennonite, Québécois, and other Ontario families.
I hold advanced-level certificates in Methodology, Canadian Records, and DNA Studies from the International Institute of Genealogical Studies, developed by St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto.
My research approach follows established genealogical standards and often incorporates land records and DNA analysis to confirm—or carefully challenge—existing conclusions.
I am an active member of the Wellington County Branch of Ontario Ancestors (Ontario Genealogical Society), where I currently serve as Vice-Chair and Co-Editor of Traces & Tracks. I also volunteer at the Branch’s Friday library drop-in sessions and regularly deliver workshops and presentations throughout the region. (See “New and Upcoming Events” for details.)
In addition, I am also a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists.
I especially enjoy the challenge of complex cases and brick-wall problems. Careful methodology, patience, and persistence are central to my work.
