Susan Arness, PLCGS, is the owner of Perham Hill Genealogy.
She has a lifelong fascination with family history.
Susan completed her first house history project at the age of fourteen, researching the pioneers who built her former home on Perham Hill Road in Farmington, Maine.
Over the years, she has become familiar with several European languages—French, German, Spanish, and various Eastern European languages—as well as Latin. She also has a deep love of local history.
Home is now Waterloo, Ontario - close to many libraries and archives, including the Archives of Ontario.
Susan holds advanced-level certificates in Methodology, Canadian Records, and DNA Studies from the International Institute of Genealogical Studies.
She is an active member of the Wellington Branch of Ontario Ancestors (Ontario Genealogical Society), currently serving as Vice-Chair, Co-Editor of Traces & Tracks (the quarterly newsletter), Council Member, and Volunteer at the Branch’s Friday library drop-in sessions. She also delivers workshops and presentations (alongside the Branch Chair and the library Archivist) at libraries throughout the region. See the “New and Upcoming Events” tab for details.
Susan specializes in Ontario research but also has the tools and training to research anywhere outside of her locale. She has done projects involving German, Irish Palatine, Loyalist, Mennonite, Quebecois, and other Southern Ontario settlers. She uses DNA analysis to help confirm or disprove existing research.
Lastly, her motto is, “When it comes to research, I never give up!” Susan especially enjoys the challenge of difficult cases and uses classic genealogical methodology to help clients break through brick walls.
